Malgrate is situated between Oliveto Lario and Lecco; in the Middle Age it was an important village with an important castle that was destroyed during the war between Como and Milan: with the beginning of the industrial period flourished mills' activities. Before the construction of Azzone Visconti's bridge, the town was connected to Lecco by a ferry boat service.
