Costa Volpino is situated between Lovere and Pisogne, at the end of  Val Camonica where the river Oglio flows into the northern part of lake Iseo, on the border between Brescia and Bergamo's provinces. In the Neolithic period it was affected by primitive settlements by the ancient Camuni, subsequently the territory was occupied by the Cenomani Gauls and then by the Romans: in this period the area was also known for the extraction of a particular type of chalk called volpinite. During the Longobards dominion and their incursions, local populations took refuge inside caves, including the most important in locality of Durno called Grotta dei Pagani. With the arrival of the French Revolution, between 1798 and 1804 the municipalities of Volpino and La Costa called "Terre della Costa di Lovere": between 1805 and 1812 of Costa di Volpino. Since 1859, with the Kingdom of Italy, it was called Costa Volpino. Interesting the 12th century castle, owned by the Brusati family, which was located in locality Volpino: in a peace treaty stipulated between Bergamo and Brescia, it was destroyed in 1198.
