Lavena Ponte Tresa is situated between the Italy - Switzerland border and Brusimpiano, and consists of two distinct centers: Lavena, which is the historical origin of the municipality, and Ponte Tresa. The first has two residential area as its historic center: locality Castello, which can be dated around the 12th century, and locality Villa, formed around the first half of the 1700. Ponte Tresa has much more recent origins, around 1846, after the construction of the bridge. In the fifties a notable development began in Lavena Ponte Tresa due to the border crossing and immigration from southern Italy: this phenomenon has brought the number of inhabitants from 1.300 to almost 5.700 . Suggestive are the local natural beauties including the picturesque strait, which divides the two basins in Lavena.
