Arona is the greatest and populous city in the southern basin of the lake Maggiore, with notable commercial importance, situated in front of the famous fortress of Angera. The town is recognizable thanks to the enormous Statue of Saint Charles Borromeo, the Sancarlone or Sancarlun, tall 23,4 meters, that it represents Carlo Borromeo, bishop of Milan; it rises on an adjacent to hill the country and it is constituted by a copper fusion and bronze, it was performed in 1697 by Bernardo Falconi and Siro Zanelli, on models of the G. B. Crispi called "il Cerano". You can visit the internal statue, there are two staircases that bring in the head, where you can stay in six persons: once reached it can be enjoyed, from the eyes of the statue, of the fascinating panorama of the lake. Going down by a panomarica road, it comes to Arona, the historical center is rich of shops and characteristic buildings as the church of the Holy Martyrs, originally Roman with Baroque facade and classical mole intern. Picturesque and famous is "piazza del Popolo", with four hundred characteristic parvises, that entertain numerous and typical restaurants, in "piazza San Graziano" you can see the Civic Archaeological Museum. In the night the town becomes animated, there are infact numerous nighttime places and restaurants that are filled and they also attract people from Milano and Novara. Every year, between the end of May and beginning of June, there is the Fierce Campionaria, an important demonstration for the operators on lake Maggiore.
