Como, chief town of the province that gives the name to the homonym lake, is positioned in the south-western part of the Lario, surrounded by morainic hills, between Cernobbio and Laglio. Historically it was initially installed by Gallic people, then followed the Romans, the barbaric invasions, the feudal period, the Spanish and Austrian dominations, the Renaissance period and the famous five days of 1848: the city was the country of brave and famous men (for example the two Pliniis of the Roman period, the Giovios of the Renaissance and Alexander Volta of the recent period) and it is testimonied by the monuments, the boundaries that surround the historical center, the temples and the villas. Como was considered the capital of the silk, famous to national and international level; actually it remains an important entrepreneurial center, in strategic position near Switzerland. Interesting the hermitage of St. Donato of the Benedictine fathers, of the XV century; the Duomo, a Gothic cathedral, with the Broletto and the tower of city; the Voltiano Temple, of 1927, in honor of the centennial of the Alexander Volta's death; the Villa dell'Olmo with its park, that has entertained famous historical characters, for example Napoleone and Garibaldi.
